During the biggest open-air free music festival in Europe, Pol’and’Rock (4-6 August), also known as Polish Woodstock, the ‘NEVER AGAIN’ Association organized a football tournament promoting the message of ‘Let’s Kick Racism out of the Stadiums’, involving teenage players who are refugees from Ukraine. Together with the other participants, they manifested their protest against the war.

On another festival day a meeting was held with the rock band Strachy na Lachy (Empty Threats) at the information stand of the ‘NEVER AGAIN’ Association. For many years, this group has been involved in the activities of the ‘Music Against Racism’ campaign run by ‘NEVER AGAIN’. Krzysztof ‘Grabaz’ Grabowski, the leader of Strachy Na Lachy, explained his band’s involvement in support of the refugees from Ukraine after the outbreak of the war. Some of the musician’s family came from Volhynia (a previously Polish territory, now a region in Ukraine). In press interviews, ‘Grabaz’ emphasised the importance of having neighbours of different nationalities and how it can lead to outbursts of creativity: ‘If in some place different cultures coexist peacefully with each other, then they will undoubtedly develop that place and its culture’.

- ‘During our meeting with Strachy Na Lachy, we talked primarily about war and peace, about respect and prejudice in everyday life, about hate speech and how it can lead to violence. We asked the band to explain how music can create a better world,’ said Joanna Naranowicz, a representative of the ‘NEVER AGAIN’ Association and the lead singer of the punk band Qulturka. 

Strachy na Lachy was established in 2001 by Krzysztof ‘Grabaż’ Grabowski and Andrzej ‘Kozak’ Kozakiewicz who also play in a punk-rock group Pidzama Porno. It is one of the most famous rock bands in Poland. In 2014 the band’s leader, ‘Grabaz’, was awarded with the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta – one of the highest honours in Poland, for his ‘outstanding merits in creative work and artistic activity’.

During the Pol’and’Rock Festival, the ‘NEVER AGAIN’ Association had the honour of hosting many other bands of different music styles involved in the ‘Music Against Racism’ campaign.

The ‘Lets’ Kick Racism out of the Stadiums’ tournament has been organised for over twenty years by the ‘NEVER AGAIN’ Association at the Polish Woodstock/Pol’and’Rock Festival. In 2022 it was co-organized with the grass-roots football team FC GAN Pila and supported by FARE network and the Adidas Football Collective through its grassroots support programme. Tournament’s male and female participants jointly express their support for the ideas that guide the entire festival: peace, friendship and respect for diversity. This year, the message resonated particularly strongly with young players from Ukraine who had had to flee the cruelty of war.

During the Pol’and’Rock Festival, the ‘NEVER AGAIN’ Association also organised educational workshops on volunteering and supporting refugees. At NEVER AGAIN’s information stand, there were also practical worskhops on designing anti-racist DIY sew-on patches and t-shirts with the use of stencils and paints. The resulting items of clothing with the message ‘Music Against Racism’ were presented to the participants!

The ‘NEVER AGAIN’ Association is an independent anti-racist organization founded in Warsaw in 1996. It has campaigned against antisemitism, racism and xenophobia, and for peace, intercultural dialogue and human rights both in Poland and internationally. ‘NEVER AGAIN’ has conducted the first anti-racism campaign in Eastern European football, ‘Let’s Kick Racism Out of the Stadiums’ and is a founding member of the FARE network. 

The campaign ‘Let’s Kick Racism out of Stadiums’ was a brainchild of the late Marcin Kornak (1968-2014), who chaired ‘NEVER AGAIN’ for many years. ‘Let’s Kick Racism out of Stadiums’ has run since the mid-1990s with the aim to combat racism and discrimination at stadiums. One of its main components is monitoring and reporting of hate crimes and hate speech cases.

INTERNATIONAL DEBATES ON HUMAN RIGHTS HOSTED BY ‘NEVER AGAIN’ AT POL’AND’ROCK FESTIVAL

The biggest open-air free music festival in Europe, Pol’and’Rock, also known as Polish Woodstock, took place from 1 to 4 August 2019. The ‘NEVER AGAIN’ Association organized a series of anti-racism activities accompanying the festival.

The festival line up included internationally known performers who oppose racism and discrimination such as Gogol Bordello, Skunk Anansie, Ziggy Marley, and Prophets of Rage. The last band includes former members of Rage Against The Machine, Audioslave, Public Enemy and Cypress Hill.

The festival stand of the ‘NEVER AGAIN’ Association was the venue of a debate with Nay San Lwin, a human rights activist and representative of the persecuted minority of Rohingya in Myanmar (Burma). For years he has been drawing the attention of world public opinion to the genocidal practices used by the military dictatorship against the Rohingya, such as violence, hunger and forced evictions. The genocide in Myanmar has been documented by the United Nations. The other participants of the debates organized by ‘NEVER AGAIN’ included members of Opferperspektive (Victim’s Perspective), a German organization which helps the victims of hate crimes, as well as activists from Denmark, Moldova, and Belarus.

Poland’s Civil Rights Ombudsman Adam Bodnar also participated in a meeting organised by the ‘NEVER AGAIN’ Association during the festival. Mr Bodnar spoke about the recent cases of homophobic violence in Poland. Furthermore, the ‘NEVER AGAIN’ Association organized a football tournament promoting the message of ‘Let’s Kick Racism out of the Stadiums’ among the festival participants. On 2 August, the group’s members played a match with the Ombudsman’s team led by Adam Bodnar himself.

During the festival days ‘NEVER AGAIN’ organized many other educational activities, including public discussions with numerous musicians involved in its ‘Music Against Racism’ campaign and an anti-fascist quiz with the ‘Naprzod’ (Forward) Foundation. The anti-racist educational activity during the festival was supported by Studio K2, the Fare network, and the Warsaw-based Rotary Club Goethe.

POKÓJ JEST DROGĄ! – NOWA PŁYTA Z PRZESŁANIEM ‘MUZYKA PRZECIWKO RASIZMOWI’ ZAWIERA UTWORY ROBERTA BRYLEWSKIEGO

Utwory Roberta Brylewskiego (‘Mam dość’ Kryzysu i ‘Nikt’ Izraela) otwierają i zamykają wyjątkową płytę winylową ‘Punk Alive. Pokój jest drogą!’ wydaną przez organizatorów Life Festival Oświęcim pod patronatem kampanii ‘Muzyka Przeciwko Rasizmowi’ Stowarzyszenia‘NIGDY WIĘCEJ’.

Robert Brylewski (zm. 3 czerwca 2018), legendarny muzyk, współtwórca sceny niezależnej w Polsce, od wielu lat wspierał kampanię ‘Muzyka Przeciwko Rasizmowi’. W 1999 roku wraz z zespołem Falarek Band przekazał utwór ‘F.B.’ na wydaną pod egidą ‘NIGDY WIĘCEJ’ kompilację ‘Jedna rasa – ludzka rasa’. Pod patronatem akcji ‘Muzyka Przeciwko Rasizmowi’ ukazała się m.in. płyta ‘Świat Czarownic i Robert Brylewski’ z 2002 roku oraz edycje albumów Izraela ‘Duchowa rewolucja’, ‘Życie jak muzyka’, ‘Dża ludzie’. Robert Brylewski był pomysłodawcą i współorganizatorem Grand Festivalu Róbrege, na którym od 1983 roku występowali artyści związani ze sceną alternatywną – od roku 2013 kolejne edycje reaktywowanego festiwalu odbywały się pod patronatem ‘Muzyki Przeciwko Rasizmowi’.

Płyta ‘Punk Alive. Pokój jest drogą!’ to bezpłatne wydawnictwo niekomercyjne, które towarzyszy zaplanowanemu na 16 czerwca 2018 roku koncertowi ‘Punk Alive’ w trakcie oświęcimskiego festiwalu i zawiera piosenki kapel: Kryzys, Armia, Włochaty, The Bill, Zielone Żabki, Farben Lehre, KSU, Prawda i Izrael. – ‘Na albumie znalazły się utwory zespołów zasłużonych. Bezspornie wszystkie te zespoły odcisnęły wyraźne piętno na polskiej muzyce rockowej. W swoich repertuarach mają również kawałki antyrasistowskie, a wiele z nich wielokrotnie wspierało kampanię Muzyka Przeciwko Rasizmowi. Dotyczy to zwłaszcza twórczości Roberta Brylewskiego’ – powiedział Arkadiusz Zacheja, wieloletni współpracownik Stowarzyszenia ‘NIGDY WIĘCEJ’.

Ponadto koncert ‘Punk Alive’ poprzedziła publikacja multimedialnego fanzina, w którym znalazły się rozmowy z artystami (m.in. Kazikiem, Tomaszem Budzyńskim, Siczką i Maleo) oraz fragmenty ich utworów. Wydawnictwo to, stylizowane na dawny, punkowy zin, zawiera też komiksy znanego rysownika i karykaturzysty ‘Badyla’, czyli Przemka Badowskiego-Małyszka, związanego głównie z prasą kontrkulturową. Zin również ukazał się pod szyldem ‘Muzyki Przeciwko Rasizmowi’.

Life Festival odbywa się w Oświęcimiu od 2010 roku. W kontekście pamięci o dokonywanej w tym miejscu Zagładzie to wydarzenie wyjątkowe, którego ideą jest, jak podają organizatorzy, ‘budowanie pokojowych relacji ponad granicami kulturowymi i państwowymi’. Podczas dotychczasowych edycji na festiwalu zagrali m.in. Matisyahu (nowojorski wokalista reggae związany z ortodoksyjnym judaizmem), Manu Chao, Eric Clapton, Soundgarden, Sting i Peter Gabriel. Wystąpili również uznani polscy artyści: Kroke z Anną Marią Jopek, Brodka, Edyta Bartosiewicz, Kayah, Dawid Podsiadło, Luxtorpeda i Voo Voo.

‘Muzyka Przeciwko Rasizmowi’ to prowadzona od połowy lat 90. kampania społeczna, której pomysłodawcą i wieloletnim koordynatorem był Marcin Kornak (ur. 1968 – zm. 2014), założyciel Stowarzyszenia ‘NIGDY WIĘCEJ’, poeta i autor tekstów zespołów sceny niezależnej. Zaangażowali się w nią artyści przywiązani do różnych stylów muzycznych, którzy wyrażają swój sprzeciw wobec rasistowskiej przemocy i faszyzmu. Koncerty organizują pod hasłem przewodnim kampanii, a na okładkach swoich wydawnictw i w mediach społecznościowych zamieszczają jej logotyp: charakterystyczną biało-czarną dłoń, która stała się rozpoznawalnym symbolem takich wartości jak pokój, przyjaźń i różnorodność. We współpracy z ‘NIGDY WIĘCEJ’ ukazała się seria płyt z antyrasistowskimi utworami. Od wielu lat przesłanie ‘Muzyki Przeciwko Rasizmowi’ obecne jest też na największym europejskim festiwalu, Przystanku Woodstock (obecnie festiwal Pol’and’Rock).

Stowarzyszenie ‘NIGDY WIĘCEJ’ jest powstałą w 1996 roku niezależną, apolityczną organizacją, która monitoruje incydenty na tle ksenofobicznym oraz wydaje antyrasistowski magazyn ‘NIGDY WIĘCEJ’. Prowadzi kampanie społeczne, m.in. ‘Muzyka Przeciwko Rasizmowi’ i ‘Wykopmy Rasizm ze Stadionów’.‎
